A Christian friend of mine was arguing with me about some contradictions and absurdities in the bible. He accused me of “exceptional arrogance”. This is my reply:
You’re well within your right for you to accuse me of “exceptional arrogance”. You are a shining paragon of humility. You nobly espouse humble beliefs, such as that of non-believers (of all stripes) being subjected to eternal torture. You humbly submit to a benevolent deity who, when not promoting and aiding indiscriminate slaughter, stands idly by when others are similarly butchered. Well, even a perfect, omnipresent god can’t do everything or be everywhere at once. He’s surely got other good deeds to attend to, like encouraging the sacrifice of children.
You generously spend your time worshipping your god’s son (which also happens to be himself, isn’t he just amazing?), who was so nice he introduced the idea of “everlasting fire”, and — when the time’s right — he’ll come back and kill all the people who don’t agree with him. What a lovely, humble chap.
Oh, and don’t forgot those other religions. They’re among the most arrogant people in the world, they don’t have the humility to accept the one, true god.
It’s such a shame that those hideously arrogant scientists disproved some of your humble, holy truths. But they’re wrong, they must be, because those truths are in the bible. Mary was a virgin! The laws of biology are just so arrogant, they just don’t allow for any exceptions. And as for the earth being billions of years old! Pah! Don’t be so ridiculously arrogant! It can’t be true, because the good book says so! And that just can’t be wrong, as it’s the work of an all-powerful, infallible god. It’s all just so humbling!
How dare you accuse me of arrogance?
